“Simply holding the hand of a loving partner can affect us profoundly, literally calming jittery neurons in the brain…. When love doesn’t work, we hurt…. Love is not the icing on the cake of life itself. It is a basic primary need, like oxygen or water”

- Sue Johnson, Hold Me Tight (2008), pages 26-27

Relationships have healing powers. They can soothe us. They can give us hope. They can make us feel loved and worthy. This ability makes our relationships so important and incredibly powerful. That power can also be scary. It makes sharing our weaknesses with our partners vulnerable: What if they won’t love me anymore?

As a therapist, I love to help couples and families develop safe, secure, loving relationships.

I’m Katherine, a mom with ADHD in my 40s. In 2023, I decided to change careers and pursue a more fulfilling career as a couples counselor. As the daughter of a combat veteran, I chose to focus my internship on veterans. I interned at the Orlando VA on the FIRST team working with veterans and their partners on a range of concerns involving (but not limited to): relationships, complex trauma, depression, anxiety and sex. Each of these can affect our intimate relationships.

I work with couples to explore the impact that their individual concerns have on their relationship and vice versa: the effect that their relationship dynamics have on their personal mental health. Once we can see clearly what is happening, we can make changes to improve both. Getting a full understanding from each partner’s perspective leads to increased empathy between partners.

Empathy leads to connection. And connection enriches our intimate relationship, which makes the rest of our lives better.
